A Guide to LED Module Strings
LED modules are used in signage and display projects where fast installation, shallow depth, and uniform illumination are critical.
Their integrated lenses allow for use in tight spaces without hot spots, reducing the need for multiple tape runs.
Their compact size, IP-rated build, and pre-wired connection format make them a practical solution for curved surfaces, shallow trays, and outdoor environments.
This article introduces the new Tagra LED Module range, recently launched as part of the Ultra LEDs offering, and where it fits across real-world commercial applications.
What Are LED Modules?
LED modules are pre-wired 12V lighting units used in signage and display installs where LED tape is impractical. Compact, durable, and IP-rated, they suit shallow, curved, or irregular housings, both indoors and outdoors.
Each module typically contains one or more LEDs, mounted on a plastic or resin base, with connection wires attached at each end.
This format makes them ideal for routing around curves, spacing out across uneven surfaces, and fitting into shallow or irregular enclosures where LED tape may be impractical.
Where To Use LED Module Strings
LED modules are ideal for signage and display installs where space is tight, shapes are curved, or enclosures are shallow.
In these conditions, they offer two key advantages:
- Lensed optics, which reduce the number of LEDs needed to create even light
- Pre-wired format, which eliminates the need for soldering or diffusers in compact builds
This makes them a practical choice for fast, efficient installs where LED tape may require extra depth, solder joins, or profiles to achieve the same result.
While not a full replacement for tape in every case, modules often outperform LED tape in lightboxes and similar applications where flexibility and compact mounting are required.
Typical Applications
- Built-up lettering and channel signs
- Shop fascia and outdoor branding
- Window displays with limited access
- Backlighting uneven or segmented surfaces
- Lightboxes and compact enclosures
- Modular event signage or mobile brand setups
What Is The Difference Between LED Strip And LED Module?
In certain applications, LED modules offer a faster, more reliable solution than LED tape. They are:
- Quicker to install with no soldering or profile assembly
- Effective in shallow or tight spaces, thanks to integrated lenses that spread light evenly with fewer units
- Flexible around curves without needing to cut
- Durable outdoors, with IP65 or IP66 protection
- Simple to connect using pre-wired jumpers
- Stable in mobile or exposed setups, where vibration or weather could affect tape
Modules are ideal where LED tape would need extra housing, sealing, or diffusers to perform effectively, especially in signage, built-up letters, or exposed environments.
Planning Your Install
Driver Compatibility
- All modules use 12V DC. Pair with a regulated, non-dimmable 12V LED driver, such as the Tagra 12V 200W model.
- Leave 10–20% headroom in driver load
- Use RGBW controllers where required
- Ensure all connections are secure and protected
Spacing and Mounting
- Typical spacing: 100–150mm between modules
- Mount with screws using the supplied pads, for long-term security
- Fix modules to a solid surface (e.g. ACM panel) to support thermal regulation
- Connect in series using the pre-wired leads, up to the maximum run length specified
Recommended Module Use Cases
- For indoor display signs: use 1-dot or 2-dot modules in 6500K
- For external shop fascias: use 3-dot 6500K modules with IP66 protection
- For colour branding or illuminated logos: use RGBW 3-dot modules with a controller
The Tagra LED Module Range

FAQs
Can LED modules be cut like tape?
LED modules can’t be cut like tape. Each module is pre-wired and must be removed or replaced individually without cutting the chain.
Can I run these on 24V?
Tagra LED modules can’t be run on 24V. They are specifically designed for 12V input only and will not function correctly at higher voltages.
Are they dimmable?
Only the RGBW LED modules are dimmable. These require a compatible RGBW controller. PRO series modules have a fixed output and do not support dimming.
Can I use these in enclosed signage?
LED modules can be used in enclosed signage if airflow is considered. IP-rated versions are suitable for sealed applications but still need thermal management.
Can LED modules be replaced?
LED modules can be replaced, but not as a simple plug-in swap. Each unit is part of a pre-wired chain, so faulty modules must be desoldered and replaced to maintain continuity.
How long do LED modules last?
Tagra LED modules typically last between 30,000 and 50,000 hours. Lifespan depends on installation conditions, driver quality, and heat management.
