Aloft by Marriott Manchester City Centre is a new 358-room hotel on Deansgate in the centre of Manchester. The development is the first Aloft hotel in the city and the largest Aloft property in Europe.
Developed by Dean Street Developments, with architecture by SimpsonHaugh and interiors by SpaceInvader, the hotel includes 358 guest rooms alongside its reception, bars and communal areas.
As part of the fit-out, Ultra LEDs products were used across several areas of the hotel, including the main bar, upstairs bar, reception, staircase and guest corridors.
Aloft forms part of the 22-storey 325 Deansgate development, positioned between Deansgate and Castlefield, an area known for its canals, Victorian railway infrastructure and red-brick industrial architecture.
The building occupies an unusual site alongside the historic Deansgate railway viaduct. The tower cantilevers four metres over the viaduct, while existing Grade II-listed railway arches have been retained and incorporated into the wider development.
The surrounding area also influenced SimpsonHaugh's design for the building. Elements of the exterior reference the lattice ironwork associated with Castlefield's railway infrastructure, while red brick is used at the lower levels to respond to the surrounding streetscape.
Lighting features throughout the hotel, with different applications used as guests move from the entrance and reception through to the bars, staircase and accommodation floors.
Neon Flex was integrated into the bar and furniture details, including beneath seating and around the curved bar fronts. Linear lighting was also incorporated into the staircase, while approximately 600 individual light bars were produced for the guest corridors.
This meant the project required both flexible lighting for curved details and compact linear lighting for the repeated fittings used throughout the hotel.
Ultra LEDs supplied 12x17mm Horizontal LED Neon Flex and 8mm Mini 4 Essential COB LED Tape for the project, with the products used across the bars, furniture, staircase and guest corridors.
The Neon Flex was used for the curved and integrated details around the hotel, while the Mini 4 COB LED Tape was installed within LED profile to create the corridor light bars.
One of the largest parts of the project was the lighting across the guest accommodation floors, where approximately 600 individual light bars were required above the room entrances.
The light bars were produced using 8mm Mini 4 Essential COB LED Tape installed inside LED profile. The narrow tape allowed a compact linear fitting to be created, with the same construction repeated across the corridors throughout the 358-room hotel.
Elsewhere, 12x17mm Horizontal LED Neon Flex was used where the lighting needed to follow curved forms. This included the bar fronts and furniture details, where the horizontal bend allowed the product to follow the shape of the joinery while maintaining a continuous illuminated line.
Across Aloft Manchester, the lighting supplied by Ultra LEDs ranges from individual details within bars and furniture to approximately 600 light bars across the guest corridors.
Using 12x17mm Horizontal LED Neon Flex alongside Mini 4 Essential COB LED Tape allowed the lighting to be adapted to the different requirements of each area, from curved joinery to compact linear fittings.
The completed project adds another major hotel to Manchester's Deansgate area, with Ultra LEDs products incorporated across the bars, reception, staircase and accommodation floors.
