Bletchley Park Depot, one of the main maintenance sites for West Midlands Trains, needed a lighting solution to run the length of its narrow walkways, keeping staff safe and inspections reliable during night operations.
Taylor Woodrow, the project specifier, brought in Holophane to design and supply the lighting system. Working with Ultra LEDs, Holophane supplied the lighting, with March Engineering delivering the installation.
The project required a continuous neon system, which led to the specification of Ultra LEDs’ Pro LED Neon Flex - Horizontal 12.
Maintaining clear access along the walkways was essential. Conventional column lighting was ruled out because it would:
Instead, Holophane developed a lighting system using Ultra LEDs’ Pro LED Neon Flex - Horizontal 12. Installed as a continuous run along the full length of the walkways, it avoided obstructions while delivering consistent coverage and safe, compliant lighting levels.
“In such a tight space, a traditional lighting system simply wouldn’t have worked. The solution supplied was quick to install, provided excellent light levels, and didn’t get in the way of operations."
– Ben Tilley, MEP Foreman, March Engineering
The installation had to do more than provide general lighting. It needed to balance visibility for staff access with directed output towards the rolling stock, so inspections could be carried out clearly and without glare.
Holophane tested the design before installation to confirm it met the required standards for both walkway and train-side illumination.
As the depot required lighting to cover long stretches of walkway safely and consistently, Ultra LEDs supplied the Pro LED Neon Flex - Horizontal 12 (3000K), a solution designed to deliver seamless output across extended runs.
The Neon Flex was fitted securely into an aluminium profile and installed along the access routes.
Set at a 45° angle, it provided even illumination across both the walkways and the trains alongside.
“"It was a genuine team effort with clear communication between Holophane, Taylor Woodrow, and our team. The client was delighted with the result, and I’d recommend this approach for any similar rail project.”
– Ben Tilley, MEP Foreman, March Engineering
A Complete Railway Install
The completed system provides a seamless lighting solution along the full length of the depot walkways, giving night operations and inspections clearer visibility.
Ultra LEDs was involved in the project for its ability to supply lighting systems that meet strict safety requirements. The team supported the design stage to make sure the installation achieved the right light levels for both walkways and train inspections.
Working with the team at Holophane and March Engineering, Ultra LEDs provided the products and technical support needed to deliver a system that was safe, reliable and built for daily use in a rail depot environment.
