Brighton Hospital Chapel required a full reconstruction as part of the Royal Sussex County Hospital’s 3Ts redevelopment, relocating the original structure and its stained-glass window into a new interior.
With the window now positioned in a space without access to natural daylight, the project team needed a controlled lighting system to keep it visually prominent.
Ultra LEDs supplied the COB LED tape used to recreate the appearance of daylight behind the glass, working alongside the light boxes mounted behind the window that were programmed to brighten and dim throughout the day.
DBR Ltd carried out the conservation work, dismantling the chapel stone by stone and removing the stained glass and timber panels for relocation. RES delivered the mechanical and electrical installation for the new chapel space in coordination with Laing O’Rourke.
Once relocated, the stained-glass window no longer received natural daylight. A controlled lighting system was needed to maintain its colour, depth and visibility. The solution had to be low profile, safe near heritage materials and fully concealed within the joinery.
Ultra LEDs supplied COB LED tape to provide smooth, even backlighting that simulates natural daylight behind the window. The tape delivers high colour accuracy, consistent output and minimal heat, allowing the glass to be lit evenly without visible spotting.
Its flexible format made it suitable for integration within the limited space behind the window frame.
The backlighting system is the defining feature of this installation.
It restores the depth, clarity, and colour normally created by daylight and allows the stained glass to remain the visual centre of the chapel.
The COB tape produces uniform output across the full surface of the glass, avoiding hotspots and keeping the artwork readable from all positions within the space. The result is a controlled, stable light source that brings the window forward as the primary architectural element in a room with limited natural light.
This supports the chapel’s atmosphere and ensures the window continues to serve as its main focal point for patients, staff, and visitors.
