Guys & Dolls, Bridge Theatre
Guys & Dolls, the Broadway classic by Frank Loesser, was reimagined at London’s Bridge Theatre with a dynamic, 360-degree promenade layout.
Audiences didn’t just watch the show. They stood, moved, and followed the action as scenes unfolded around them, with staging platforms rising and lowering throughout to shape the performance in real time.
We worked with the Bridge Theatre’s lighting design team to develop a system that integrated seamlessly with the 360-degree promenade staging, ensuring responsive cue control and consistency throughout the show.
A Broadway Classic, Reimagined
Directed by Nicholas Hytner, the production shifted between New York street corners and Havana nightclubs, with the audience embedded within the action through a 360-degree promenade format.
As the show progressed, platforms moved in and out of the space to reshape the stage in real time. With no overhead rigging and a fully mobile central performance area, all scenic and lighting elements had to operate at floor level, remain concealed, and align precisely with programmed cue sequences.
The production earned critical acclaim for its choreography, direction, and promenade staging. Lighting accompanied every platform movement and scene change, using consistent low-level illumination embedded directly into scenic trims and risers.
Lighting The Bridge Theatre
The production required a lighting system that could operate within a live, mobile environment. Scenic platforms, trims, and risers needed embedded lighting that was low-profile, durable, and responsive to precise cue timing.
Ultra LEDs supplied:
Installed across scenic risers, plinths, and trim edges to deliver seamless, dot-free illumination.
Protected the tape while blending cleanly into built elements and withstanding repeated motion and manual handling.
Enabled smooth dimming and direct integration with the theatre’s existing lighting control system.
Lighting A Moving Stage
With no overhead rigging and a continuously shifting layout, the Bridge Theatre required a floor-based lighting system that could perform reliably across moving platforms and reconfigurable staging.
COB LED tape was embedded into scenic trims and risers using 16x16mm aluminium profiles, selected for their low profile and durability under repeated movement.
Internal cable routing and protected terminations allowed the system to remain concealed while withstanding manual handling throughout each performance.
TRIAC dimmable drivers enabled smooth cue response, with full integration into the theatre’s wired control system. Coordination with the technical team ensured reliable performance across every live transition.
